Size does matter

Accept criticism and disappointment as part of life and when it comes, stand up, look it in the eye, and say, ‘You can't defeat me, I am bigger than you.’ You see, size does matter. The bigness of your spirit and the size of your heart often determines how you respond when critical words are said about you and people criticise your accomplishments and failures.

Tragically, I heard the story of a young lady who is a brilliant artist, a great painter, but every time she finishes a painting her father criticises it.  So now she leaves her paintings unfinished because he can't criticise an incomplete piece of work. Often in our lives we are afraid of criticism, so we start well and then quit. We begin well and then shrink back. 

During a period of major transition in my life, I was hounded by the media, criticised and ridiculed publicly, and had a lot of untruths said about me. Everything in me wanted to react with hostility. But I remembered the words of a great friend, a very prosperous and successful businessman. 'Rise tall,' he said.

My friend, rise tall when criticism comes your way.  Look it in the eye and say, ‘I am bigger than you, I am going to become better because of this.’ It’s been said that 'the highest reward for a person’s toil is not what they get for it but what they become by it'.

When adversity hits, when you drop the ball, know that you are bigger than the situation. Don’t make the mistake that many have made, and shrink to the size of other people’s opinions, other people’s dreams, other people’s concepts of what you ought to be and do. Rise tall! Realise that you are bigger than the situation. Understand the power of posture and put yourself above the circumstance, not under it.

Challenge

Think about those situations in your life that you need to rise above. Consider possible responses and estimate what results you will get from them. Surprise your critics by being atypical in your response.
